What to Look for in a Drone
The 250-gram line
Weight is the first decision, and it is a legal one before it is a technical one. In the US, a drone under 250 grams flown purely recreationally needs no FAA registration. Cross that line and registration applies. Fly for any commercial purpose — including monetised video — and you need registration plus a Part 107 certificate regardless of what the drone weighs. What the sub-250 gram class does not buy you is different airspace rules: controlled airspace, altitude limits and no-fly zones apply identically at every weight.
Sensor size is the real image-quality decision
